It Looks Like A Sweet Home Alabama Sequel Could Be Happening

Sweet Home Alabama

first it was White Chicks, then it was Gossip Girl, now it’s Sweet Home Alabama. The revival gods are gifting us all the noughties nostalgia we could possibly wish for as it sounds like a sequel to 2002’s beloved rom-com is finally on the cards.
Starring Reese Witherspoon and Josh Lucas, Andy Tennant’s movie is up there with the likes of 50 First DatesNotting Hill10 Things I Hate About YouWhen Harry Met Sally, and Clueless. Sure, Sweet Home Alabama might be a little underrated, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a cult following that demands to know what happened next.
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, Lucas hyped the possibility of a Sweet Home sequel:
“I’m up for it. I know Reese’s said she is as well. The director [Andy Tennant] is absolutely up for it. I spoke to him about it a couple of times recently.
“So look, I throw it out to you, Reese. I think the person who’s the one to put it together is Reese, so I’m hoping. Who knows?

“She’s got a lot of irons in the fire to say the least. Hopefully this is one of them.”
Lucas added that while Tennant “has a script and a development he has done,” it “doesn’t mean” there’s an official announcement just yet.
A heartwarming tale of embracing who you really are, Sweet Home Alabama followed Witherspoon’s Melanie as she headed back to her humble southern roots to divorce her childhood sweetheart. Lucas played the loveable and artistic Jake, while Grey’s Anatomy‘s Patrick Dempsey was Melanie’s socialite New York fiance. It doesn’t take a genius to work out who she ends up going for.
Long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe gave us mid-credits scenes, Sweet Home Alabamahad Melanie and Jake enjoying happily (still) married life. They were shown to have a young daughter, Jake had set up his own glass design franchise, and Dempsey’s Andrew was engaged to a new woman.

Even though Sweet Home Alabama had some pretty polarising reviews (scoring just 38% on Rotten Tomatoes), it grossed an impressive $180.6 million against a budget of just $30. Discussing what made fans fall in love with the movie, Lucas added: “I think the thing about the story, it’s one of those [where] they’re eternally in love.
“So, even if they’re going through a rough time, whatever it is, they’re eternally in love. That’s kind of the beauty in that magical film.”
Either way, there’s sure to be plenty of rom-com fanatics out there who’d part with their cash to see Sweet Home Alabama 2.
