Dove Cameron and Michelle Obama Wrote Heartfelt Tributes to Cameron Boyce

The Descendants actor Cameron Boyce passed away in his sleep at the age of 20 on Saturday, July 6, due to a seizure as part of an ongoing medical condition. Since hearing the tragic news, celebrities and fans have paid tribute to the actor, including his Jessie costars Skai Jackson, Debby Ryan, and Josie Totah.
In the days following his death, Cameron’s Descendants costar Dove Cameron broke her silence and shared a heartfelt tribute to her friend and castmate, as did former first lady Michelle Obama, who met Cameron during her time at the White House.
Dove posted a series of videos to Instagram, talking about Cameron and his impact on her life. In the videos, Dove is seen in black and white wearing her glasses and looking visibly emotional. She prefaces the videos by saying that posting on social media made her feel “really weird,” but after going to therapy, she decided it was best to “be expressive and connect.” Dove added that she wrote something about Cameron and wanted to read it.

“I will never have enough words for the pain I feel and the love and space in my heart that I hold for you,” she read. “Cameron was one of my favorite people alive in the world, though I know that’s not unique to me. Cameron was magic, an earth angel. Over the last six years, since he was only 14, Cameron talked me down from countless ledges, talked me through eating disorders, helped me out of a dark relationship and through endless breakdowns.”
Dove went on to share memories about their time together on set. “He would whisper the dance moves to me on live television when I didn’t know what I was doing, or hold my hand to communicate wordlessly when we both knew we were thinking the same thing. I can’t count on one hand the number of times we ruined something because we couldn’t stop making each other laugh.”
Her tribute to Cameron continued. “Everyone keeps talking about how talented he was, and he was undoubtedly the most talented person most of will ever know. But what was special about Cameron was who he was in the small moments when maybe no one was looking,” Dove said. “The moments in between the big ones, when he didn’t have to be good or kind. Cameron was always good and kind ... Cameron was an ultimate example of a human being.”

She closed her video message with an emotional goodbye to her friend. “Goodbye, my dear dear friend and brother. You leave behind a colossal wake, a profound chasm that can never be filled. But you also leave millions and millions of deeply-impacted, hope-filled and love -filled human beings who are who they are because of you and how you spent your brief 20 years on this earth. What a gift you were. You turned the world on its head,” Dove read. “I will spend the rest of my life missing and loving you, and all the better for knowing you.”

Former First Lady Michelle Obama was also directly affected by Cameron’s talent and bright light. She posted an Instagram about the actor on July 9, sharing a photo of herself and a young Cameron at the White House.
“I was lucky enough to share a few moments with Cameron Boyce—on set, at the White House, and on a service project—enough time to recognize that not only did he have incredible talent, but also an incredible heart. Sending out a lot of love and hugs to his family, friends, and his many, many fans,” she wrote.
Both tributes to the late actor give us a glimpse at what a wonderful, loving, and kind person Cameron was. It’s clear that he’s impacted so many, and that his legacy will never be forgotten.
